Every New Category Makes the Directory More Specific and More Complicated
Businesses often ask for a new category because the existing choices feel too broad. Sometimes that request reveals a genuine gap. Other times it creates another label for a service already represented elsewhere.
Start with the visitor's search behaviour
Ask whether customers would reasonably browse or search for the proposed category as a distinct need. A category should help discovery, not simply mirror one company's preferred marketing term.
Check for overlap before creating it
If most of the businesses would also sit naturally inside an existing category, consider aliases or secondary tags instead of another navigation branch.
Make sure the category can support useful results
A page containing one or two listings may not justify a permanent category unless the subject is genuinely specialist and expected to grow.
Record declined terms as search aliases
A rejected category name can still help search if visitors use the phrase. This keeps navigation simple without ignoring real vocabulary.
Review categories after launch
If the new section remains empty, attracts unrelated submissions, or confuses visitors, it can be merged or retired.
A category system should evolve carefully. The goal is not to give every business its own perfect label, but to organise choices in a way that makes sense to the people using the directory.
New categories should solve a recurring discovery problem
A category request is strongest when several businesses and searches point to the same missing concept. One unusual listing is not always enough to justify a permanent branch in the taxonomy. Review search terms, existing categories, and whether filters could represent the distinction more cleanly.
If a new category is created, define its scope before moving listings into it. Include examples of what belongs and what does not, so future moderators make consistent choices. Avoid names that are so narrow they will remain nearly empty or so broad they duplicate a parent category. A good addition makes browsing easier for users and classification clearer for businesses at the same time.
